I’ve played over 1,000 games of Super Tecmo Bowl (NES), and here’s what I’ve learned—and what I’d do if I owned an NFL team

1. 90% of my strategy would focus on passing plays, even on the 1-yard line.

2. The Minnesota Vikings should be a much better team.

3. The Raiders haven’t been the same since Bo Jackson.

4. I’d go for an onside kick 90% of the time.

5. The flea flicker pass is wildly entertaining, so I’d design more plays around that style.

6. Long bombs down the field would be a key part of my offense.

7. I’d blitz on every field goal attempt.

8. If I didn’t go for an onside kick, I’d punt to the deep right corner.

9. I’d blitz on every single play.

10. Minnesota and the Chargers have the best passing plays in the game.

11. Against any opponent—computer or human—I’d always pick the same play to defend. You’ve got a 1-in-8 chance of guessing correctly.

12. Zig-zag running for the win!

Now, if only real NFL teams could adopt a Super Tecmo Bowl mindset!
